Textbook and Computer Requirements
Required Textbook
You are learning the most current veterinary medical information, most of which hasn’t even been published yet. There is currently only one required textbook for first year, which is: Evans, H. and A deLahunta. (2010) Guide to the dissection of the dog. (8th or 7th Ed.). Philadelphia, W.B. Saunders. You may purchase new, used or digital.
All of the other reading material will be provided in class in the form of PowerPoints or digital notes.
Computer Requirements
Please note that these are the minimum computer requirements as of March 1, 2024. Chromebooks are not supported.
Windows PC
- Platform: Any laptop or tablet (HP, Dell, etc.) that meets the following requirements.
- Tablet devices other than Surface Pros are not supported. Note that Microsoft Surface computers must be a Surface Pro 4 or newer running MS Windows 10 or 11
- Operating System: 64-bit versions of Windows 10 or 11. Alternate versions of Windows 10 and 11 (Windows RT and Windows 10/11 S) are not supported at this time
- The versions of Windows certified for use are Windows 10 22H2, Windows 11 22H2, and Windows 11 23H2
- CPU Processor: Non-ARM based processor supported by your operating system
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB required, 16 GB or higher recommended
- Hard Drive: Minimum 250 GB/ Recommended 500 GB or higher SSD (Solid State Drive)
- Wireless: Wi-Fi Capable
- Webcam: Integrated camera or external USB camera supported by your operating system Virtual cameras are not supported
- Microphone (no virtual mics)
- Warranty: 3 Year on-site service support with accident damage coverage (4 year is highly recommended).
- Software: Students can purchase the Graduate Software Bundle through the Virginia Tech Software Service Center.
- Any backup method of choice including cloud-based services like Google Drive.
Mac
- Platform: Laptop or Tablet
- Operating System: macOS Monterey (ver. 12), Ventura (ver. 13), and Sonoma (ver. 14). Only genuine versions of Mac operating systems are supported
- Processor: Intel, M1, or M2 processor. Devices using Apple’s M1 and M2 processors and Apple Rosetta 2 are supported
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB required, 16 GB or higher recommended
- Hard Drive: Minimum 250 GB/ Recommended 500 GB or higher SSD (Solid State Drive)
- Wireless: Wi-Fi Capable

iPad
- Hardware Requirements = iPad 5+, iPad Air 2+, iPad Pro, or iPad Mini 4+
- Operating System = iPadOS 15, 16, and 17 (Only genuine versions of iOS are supported)
- 128 GB minimum
- Wi-Fi
- Direct connect keyboard recommended (wireless keyboards may not be certified)
- iPad must not be Jailbroken
