Bio

Hi!  I'm Mareena Bowman, a non-traditional first-generation student hailing from Lexington, Virginia. My journey into veterinary medicine has been shaped by a lifelong affinity for horses, though I've broadened my experience to encompass various species, including wildlife. Emergency medicine and critical care hold my true passion, steering me towards a career dedicated to their pursuit. For specialization, I've chosen to focus on small animals and exotics, leading me to opt for the mixed animal track. This track aligns seamlessly with my career ambitions, offering both versatility with different species and the flexibility to engage in rotations focused on exotics.

Embracing the role of a non-traditional student, I initially faced some nerves about navigating the workload and academic demands. However, the life skills acquired through age have proven invaluable. Prioritization, time management, and stress management have not only been transformative for me but have also positively impacted my peers.

One of the most beneficial aspects of my academic journey has been the guidance of mentors. The school's commitment to connecting us with experienced upperclassmen provides invaluable insights into what lies ahead and fosters essential networking opportunities.

Beyond the textbooks, you'll often find me at the barn, indulging in my passion for riding, or engaging in friendly soccer matches. And when winter arrives, you can catch me on the slopes, snowboarding away the stress of academia.

If you're a potential student curious about the transition into vet school as a non-traditional student, I'm here for you. Feel free to reach out with any questions, and I'll be more than happy to share my experiences and insights. Looking forward to connecting with future colleagues!
