Trey Maybury
- Track: Mixed Animal
Bio
Hello! My name is Trey Maybury and I am proud to be a VMCVM Student Ambassador. I am from Hamilton, Bermuda and received my BSc in Animal Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. Like many of my peers, I have wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as I can remember, and look forward to being able to use my skills to serve my community, through patient advocacy and exploring ways to reduce clients’ access to culturally competent veterinary care. As a multilingual international student, I know firsthand how certain cultural nuances can impact our interactions with clients and ultimately affect the way we are able to care for their furry family members. This is why I am studying on the mixed animal track, and plan to use my skills and experiences to help bridge this gap across a variety of species disciplines, in practice.
I chose to study at VMCVM because of our spiral curriculum, where we develop a foundational understanding of key topics early in the program and continue to revisit and develop our understanding of them throughout our time here. Another reason I chose to study here was because of the integrated, systems-based approach to the curriculum. By studying how different “puzzle pieces” come together in different bodily processes, I’ve learned to conceptualize and apply the theory we learn to real-life cases in our integrative sessions. In doing so, I’ve noticed that my clinical aptitude and ability to “think like a doctor” have soared since starting my studies here.
On campus I’m involved in several student organizations, including the college’s chapter of the Student National Asociation of Black Veterinarians (SNABV) and Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE). Outside of school, I enjoy gardening, cooking, watching movies and socializing with friends. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to reach out to me at amaybury@vt.edu !
