Bio

Hello, I'm Esther, and I am from Silver Spring, Maryland. I pursued a major in animal sciences and a minor in French studies at the University of Maryland. During my undergraduate studies, I had the privilege to work with a diverse range of species, including horses, cattle, chickens, sheep, and pigs. Among my most memorable experiences was my time in UMD's Avian Behavioral Neuroscience Lab, where I worked with budgies, zebra finches, canaries, and cockatiels. This exposure sparked my passion for Avian Medicine, prompting my interest in exploring as many avian-related classes as possible.

Currently, I am interested the Mixed Animal Species track, as I'm torn between focusing on poultry medicine or avian medicine. While there isn't a specific track for either of those, I'm excited to take advantage of the numerous avian and poultry courses available. Additionally, I'm grateful for the mentorship opportunities provided by faculty members specializing in poultry.

I love being a student at VMCVM because of its outstanding curriculum and unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusivity. I was initially a bit hesitant about moving to Blacksburg, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover a welcoming community within various clubs, including PrideSVMC, Mesa Espanola, and the Latinx Veterinary Medical Association. Due to this welcoming atmosphere I was able to become the President of PrideSVMC as a first year and create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students and allies. Besides that, I am poultry chair of FAPC (Food Animal Practitioner Club) which allows me to explore my interest in poultry medicine at a more involved level. If you have any questions about either organization or questions in general about the school, please do not hesitate to reach out!
